DeepSummary
The podcast episode begins with Major Jackson introducing and reading the poem 'Mercy' by Dessa. The poem explores the concept of forgiveness, describing it as a difficult yet necessary process of undoing oneself and letting go of grievances in order to find peace and empathy.
Jackson reflects on the phrase 'I'll forgive but I'll never forget,' which his family often used in response to hurt or slight. He admits that while forgiveness allows him to stay 'drama free' and true to his calm nature, it is not always easy, especially when faced with past wounds from cruel or insensitive people.
Jackson concludes that true healing comes not from seeking validation or proving oneself worthy to those who have caused harm, but from reaching a point where one no longer cares for their acceptance. The poem 'Mercy' captures the painful yet ultimately liberating journey of forgiveness.

Today’s poem is Mercy by Dessa.
The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual. In this episode, Major writes… “I never took to the attitude of I’ll show them. It concedes that those people, people who did not think enough of me to take care of my feelings, are still in my life, in an unhealthy manner, subconsciously controlling my actions. My success is not going to suddenly prove me worthy of love in their eyes. Will they have thought better of that moment when they scarred me? Maybe. Will they think me more intelligent than they initially granted? Possibly. But, truth is, I am healed when I no longer care to have their acceptance or validation.”
