DeepSummary
Lauren Laverne interviews Professor Tim Spector, a scientist and professor of genetic epidemiology at King's College London, on his work studying the gut microbiome and how it relates to diet and health. Spector discusses how the gut microbiome produces chemicals that affect various aspects of the body, and how his research has challenged conventional nutritional advice focused solely on calories, fats, and sugars.
Spector shares his unconventional path to becoming a doctor, initially rebelling against his father's wishes but later embracing medicine. He recounts setting up the Twins UK Registry to study genetic and environmental influences on health. After a health scare in 2011, Spector became interested in the microbiome and launched the COVID Symptom Study app during the pandemic.
The interview covers Spector's musical tastes, including tracks that remind him of different life events and his relationships with his parents. He also discusses adventures like surviving a helicopter crash while ski touring, and his plans for fermenting food on a desert island.
Key Episodes Takeaways
- The gut microbiome produces chemicals that affect various aspects of health, challenging conventional nutritional advice focused on calories, fats, and sugars.
- Calorie counting is an ineffective and unsustainable approach to weight loss, as the body compensates by slowing metabolism and increasing hunger.
- A diverse diet with plenty of plants, fermented foods, and time-restricted eating can cultivate a healthy gut microbiome.
- Professor Spector pioneered large-scale twin studies to research genetic and environmental influences on health.
- The COVID Symptom Study app helped identify loss of smell as a key symptom of COVID-19 early in the pandemic through citizen science data collection.
- Spector values challenging accepted norms and pursuing research that changes ideas rather than just incrementally adding to existing knowledge.
- Music and specific songs evoke memories of different life events and relationships for Spector.
- Seeking adventure and taking calculated risks, like surviving a helicopter crash, are part of Spector's approach to life and work.
Top Episodes Quotes
- βWe've got so much wrong in the past because we've treated nutrition as this really simple concept of calories, fats, sugars, proteins. So all our advice has been to just very simply reduce calories, reduce fats, reduce sugars, and you'll be fine.β by Tim Spector
- βI started off thinking that meat was bad. And so I went vegan for about six weeks until I realized I couldn't give up cheese. I was very weak willed when it came to cheese, but I did give up meat for several years completely.β by Tim Spector

Tim Spector is Professor of Genetic Epidemiology and Head of the Department of Twin Research at Kingβs College London. He was one of the co-founders of the ZOE Covid Symptom study, which for which he was awarded an OBE. He has also written best-selling books about the relationship between what we eat and our health and well-being.
Tim was born in London in 1958 into a medical family. His mother was a physiotherapist and his father was an eminent pathologist, although Tim initially resisted his fatherβs encouragement to follow him into medicine. Once qualified, Tim specialised in rheumatology before switching to epidemiology. In 1992, he set up a large-scale research study of twins which now has more than 15,000 identical and non-identical twins taking part.
After a health scare in 2011, Tim became more interested in how we can influence the microbes in our gut to help us stay well. He has published several books on the science of eating well and is a pioneer in personalised food nutrition.
Tim lives in London with his wife, who is also a doctor.
