DeepSummary
In Summerville, South Carolina, Carmi Nelson, an army nurse, meets Jordan Brooke Lum in a rehab facility in 2017. Jordan invites Carmi and her pets to stay at her house rent-free. However, Carmi has a troubled past with substance abuse, and she frequently fights with her estranged husband, Daniel Nelson, who lives in a homeless camp behind a Walmart.
Tensions escalate between Carmi and Jordan as roommates due to Carmi's lack of cleanliness and Daniel's unauthorized visits. On April 2, 2017, after a drunken and drugged Daniel crashes Carmi's truck, he arrives at Jordan's house to find her brutally murdered with 113 stab and blunt force wounds. Carmi and Daniel spend the next two days with Jordan's body, getting high and attempting to clean up the crime scene.
Daniel eventually calls 911, implicating Carmi in the murder. At trial, Daniel testifies against Carmi, presenting recordings of her confessing to the crime. Carmi is found guilty and sentenced to life in prison, though her conviction is later overturned due to the admission of excessively gruesome autopsy photos. She ultimately accepts a plea deal for 30 years in prison.
