DeepSummary
The episode starts with a game of 'Ditch it or Fix it' discussing various relationship habits. The first caller is attending an expensive bachelorette party where the bride expects her bridesmaids to cover all the costs, but the caller can no longer afford it. Nick advises having an empathetic conversation with the bride about finding a middle ground that considers everyone's budgets.
The second caller wants to pursue a career in interior design by going back to school, but her husband is hesitant due to the cost and his past financial trauma. Nick suggests the caller do thorough research, communicate her passion, and make it about their shared happiness rather than just her desires.
The final caller's friend is having unprotected sex with random men in hopes of getting pregnant, despite not being in a committed relationship. Nick cautions the caller against judgment, instead recommending she express concern for her friend's wellbeing and future as a mother from a place of empathy and care.
Key Episodes Takeaways
- Approach difficult relationship conversations with empathy and a willingness to understand the other person's perspective.
- When pursuing a major life change like a career shift, do thorough research, have an action plan, and communicate it as a decision benefiting the whole family.
- Don't judge loved ones for risky choices, but express care and concern for their wellbeing from a place of compassion.
- Get to the root of why someone is making unhealthy choices, which is often stemming from a lack of self-worth.
- Set boundaries on what you're willing to engage with, but don't cut loved ones off completely for decisions you disagree with.
- Making assumptions about how a conversation will go before actually having it is unproductive.
- Frame conversations around shared goals and wanting the same positive outcomes for each other.
- Adult friendships allow distance when you disagree with someone's choices, without ending the friendship entirely.

Welcome back to another episode of The Viall Files: Ask Nick Edition! We start off by playing a game of ‘Ditch it or Fix it’: Relationship Habits Edition.
Our first caller is attending an expensive bachelorette party, and the bride is bragging that she doesn't have to pay for anything. Our caller no longer wants to go, but doesnt want to anger the bride and let the financial burden fall on the others. Our second caller hates her old job, but feels like her husband is not supportive of a career shift. She has a school and profession in mind, but his past marriage has made money a trigger for him… thus he’s resistant to helping her pay for it. Our final caller’s friend is having relationships with random men, with the specific intention to have a child. These men are unaware of that, and our caller wants to confront her with disapproval, but not come off as judgmental.
“You’re anticipating how that conversation’s going to go, before you have it.”
